Karonga-Chitipa Cultural Heritage has come out in defence of Human Rights Defenders Coalition chairperson Timothy Mtambo from allegations that he is not of Malwian descent.
The Cultural Organisation says the HRDC boss is being targeted due his hardline stance against government.
National Coordinator for the grouping Alfred Mwambila in a statement issued on Thursday said Mtambo is a true son of Malawi with documentation to prove it.
Mwambila said it is unfortunate for anyone to allege that Mtambo is a foreigner.
He explained that there is smear campaign due to desperate attempts to ‘muzzle’ critical voices.
“The Heritage believes in human rights including freedom of expression, right to demonstrate peacefully and unarmed, rule of law and state accountability,” reads the statement.
Mwambila added that they are pulling their weight behind Mtambo because most human rights activists are ‘chickening out or joining what they have called oppressors.
Mtambo has been very vocal against government and calling on people to go to the streets to demonstrate against Malawi Electoral Commissioner (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah citing mishandling of the May 21st elections.
On June 20 and July 4-5th Malawi went into a frenzy which the president Peter Mutharika called lawlessness.
Currently his vice chairperson at HRDC Gift Trapence is on remand at Maula prison on three countz relating to a transaction made under a Non-Government Organisation Mango in 2017.
Their bail hearing is set for Friday, July 12 in Lilongwe.
