Thieves in the southern district of Thyolo have stolen and vandalised network service provider Airtel disrupting the tech company's internet services.
The thieves stole 20 Shoto batteries which are said to be worth millions of kwachas.
Thyolo Police spokesperson Amos Tione disclosed they are keeping in custody Maganizo Kaliati, 36, after he was found with 20 Shoto batteries.
Tione said Kaliati and his friends went to one of Airtel towers within Thyolo boma with panga knives and clobbers.
“They dismantled the steel box where the batteries were planted and went away with the items.”
“The suspect was arrested on the same night by Chiradzulu police officers after mounting an adhoc road block at Nguludi turn-off while his accomplices ran away.”
Tione said the batteries were positively identified by Mabvuto Kavala who is a Zone Engineer for Afro Egypt Malawi which mananges Airtel's towers.
The other suspects are on the run and Tione said investigation are in progress to trace the where about of the other criminals.
Airtel Malawi spokesperson Norah Chavula-Chirwa said she did not have any information on hand when called to confirm.
“We have a security department that handles such cases,” she said.
She asked for a questionnaire to be sent via her email but said the timing was bad because of the public holiday.

The arrested culprit Maganizo Kaliati comes from Namacha village, T/A Bvumbwe in Thyolo District and is expect to appear in court soon.
