Popular musician Skeffa Chimoto will spice up the 2019 Porter’s race slated for Mulanje Mountain on Saturday, organisers of the race have confirmed.
With registration for this year’s race in progress, Mount Mulanje Porter’s Race coordinator, Kondwani Chamwala told Kulinji.com that they expect more international participants this year.
“All is set, we are good to go because we have ironed out all the challenges to find sponsors. Last year we had 41 international participants and the year before we had 79. We had few participants last year due to the bloodsucker issue but this year it is all clear. We have always had three objectives of the race which include promoting tourism, grassroots athletics and sending conservation message of the mountain which we always achieve,” Chamwala said.
This year’s athletes will compete in the 25 km and 7 km fun run.
The race has produced top athletes in the country including Francis Khanje, Theresa Master, Doris Fisha, Chancy Master and Leo Chikhwaza.
Charles is the defending champion and has won the race six times with a record finish of 2 hours four minutes.
Meanwhile Rab Processors has joined the race as sponsors by donating 3000 bottles of Vital water.
Rabs marketing manager, Anthony Kafuwa said they felt duty-bound to help the cause especially in the conservation of Mulanje Mountain.
“Mount Mulanje is a symbol of our Vital water and then we decided to join the initiative as it advocates for the conservation and we discovered that the organisers face a lot of challenges to have water for the participants. That is why we chose to bail them out on that part,” Kafuwa said.
The race starts at Likhubula valley going up the mountain through Lichenya.
