Expect heavy rains with occasional thunderstorms-MET

Rains in Malawi
  • The threat of flash flooding remains very high in some places

Though the chances of Tropical storm Cheneso reaching Malawi are remote, it is still indirectly supporting the rain into Malawi.

According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, the Tropical Storm is still in the Mozambique Channel.

The weather update stated that Cheneso is in the waters between Mozambique and Madagascar and gradually gaining its strength while moving west south westwards at 11km per hour with an estimated maximum wind speed at 65 km per hour.

“Therefore, expect heavy rains with occasional thunderstorms to continue in most areas of Malawi. Consequently, the threat of flash flooding remains very high in some places.

“Do not attempt to drive or walk across a flooded road or rivers. You cannot be sure about the depth of the water or the condition of the road. The road might be washed out. If your vehicle is suddenly caught in rising water, leave it immediately and get to higher ground,” reads the weather alert.

The Department says it will continue to monitor the movement and strength of Cheneso and update the nation accordingly.
