Ecobank Malawi Ltd has released K100 million to Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) to help people affected by Cyclone Freddy.

The bank said the package is aimed at supporting and complementing government efforts in offering first lines relief items.

Ecobank Executive Director Weluzani Chingota said they stand with Malawians as they go through turbulent times.

"We feel it is important to support the communities we work in.

"This is part of the Pan African mission of supporting the communities we live in. We felt duty bound to play our role in supporting some households that have been affected by Cyclone Freddy.

"We believe the relief pack worth K100 million that we have handed over to Dodma will go a long way in complementing government efforts during this crisis," Chingota said.

Moses Chimphepo, Director of Disaster Preparedness at DoDMA said there is dire need for proper shelter, clothes, protection, health care, food and non food items.

Dodma commended the bank of coming in with support and made assurances the money will go to the intended use.

So far 326 people have died with 700 injuries, over 200 missing, according to Dodma.

At least 40,000 households with an estimated population of 183,158 have been displaced and are being housed in 317 temporary camps.
