US applauds Chakwera’s actions on Chizuma inquiry

US Ambassador to Malawi David Young

The United States government has welcomed President Lazarus Chakwera’s Wednesday address which among others announced the firing of the Director of Public prosecutions (DPP) Dr. Steven Kayuni from his position with immediate effect.

According to the President, he considered Kayuni’s unsound judgment to be a breach of public trust and a serious matter for Malawi’s lead prosecutor to have a moment of unsound judgment or a conflict of interest.

This followed his abuse of public office to settle a personal score with Anti-Corruption Bureau’s Director General over a leaked audio which presented him as being corrupt, and he later involved the Malawi Police to arrest Chizuma in a midnight invasion on 6th December last year at her residence.

A statement from the embassy hailed Chakwera’s address which reiterated his administration’s resolve in the fight against corruption.

“The United States Embassy applauds President Chakwera’s speech today emphasizing the ongoing commitment of his government to fight against corruption in Malawi.

“We welcome the President’s important steps taken today to strengthen this fight.  The United States will continue to support these efforts to help Malawi achieve its development goals” read the statement.
