Police in Dedza are keeping in custody a form 3 student at Mayani Secondary School for allegedly raping a fellow form three student aged 16.
Dedza Police publicist, Sub inspector Edward Kabango confirmed of the arrest.
"The suspect, identified as Mervin Marijani, 19, and the victim (name withheld) were studying in one of the classes at the school together on the 19th this month around 23:00 hrs, the day the incident happened. Later on, the victim went to answer the call of nature but did not know that Mervin was following her.
“The suspect grabbed the girl and covered her mouth with a cloth and dragged her to the bush within the school campus where he raped her,” Kabango said.
He added that the victim reported everything to her friends the same night and the matter was further reported to the school authorities the next morning.
A medical report has shown positive results for rape.
Following the arrest, students at the school held demonstrations demanding the release of the suspect.
Head teacher of the school, Joseph Nkhata confirmed of the incident saying the students have damaged the administration block, kitchen and some hostels.
According to Nkhata, the student’s claims that they had consensual sex.
Mervin Marijani hails from Mlangali Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kachere in Dedza.
