Ascent Academy are the new champions of Central Region Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Women’s League Championship after whooping Hungry Lions 18-0 in the finals played at Ascent Ground.
Ascent, whose name of the title is the first, went into the finals with 33 points from 57 goals and were placed second.
Defending champions DD Sunshine also had the same number of points but were leading the standings on goal difference of as they had 62.
DD Sunshine faced a disappointing loss when they were handed a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Destiny Academy at Kamuzu Barracks Ground.
This was the first defeat of the season for DD Sunshine club and subsequently led to their failure to defend the title for the fourth consecutive time.
Coach Thom Mkolongo’s side have claimed the title unbeaten having won 11 games and drew three games.
Mkolongo said: “It’s good for girls to be the Champions after playing two seasons and I am very happy that girls finished the league unbeaten. We have good girls who play according to instructions and also good equipment and facilities which also spice up motivation to the girls.”
Destiny, who have finished third will join DD and Ascent in the National Championship.
Civil’s 14-0 win over Kamuzu Institute was not enough to earn them a place in the national championship as they have finished fourth with 29 points, just a point below the Kamuzu Barracks-based girls.
The National Women’s Football Association is expected to announce the calendar for this year’s National Women’s Championship.
